Life Cycle UK’s vision is of healthy individuals, inclusive communities and an unspoilt natural environment. We work towards these goals by promoting a form of travel that is simple, affordable and equitable – the bicycle!
Cycling is a near-perfect form of exercise suitable for people of all ages. A short bike ride (the journey to work, or to school, or to the shops…) is an ideal way of achieving the Department of Health’s recommendation of 30 minutes’ physical activity each day. Cycling has additional advantages. It requires no elaborate equipment and it can be integrated easily into a person’s daily routine.
Cycling is an empowering form of transport. It offers independent mobility and a broader range of choices. It puts people in touch with each other and with their localities, contributing towards the creation of safer, friendlier neighbourhoods.
Cycling is one of the most energy-efficient forms of travel ever devised. It produces virtually no noise, pollution or greenhouse emissions.
Through a range of innovative, practical projects Life Cycle UK helps people discover – or rediscover – cycling.
Health on Wheels is the name of an exciting new project from Life Cycle UK. It offers a unique programme of “cycling on prescription” working in partnership with doctors and other healthcare professionals in the greater Bristol area. Patients whose condition will benefit from being more active are helped to take up cycling. A course of six cycle training sessions are available to patients free of charge, plus plus practical advice and information about routes and bike-related events.
Our training courses are suitable for people aged 15 and upwards. Our oldest clients have been in their 70s. You’re never too old to learn!
Training is one-to-one or for small groups and is tailored to meet your individual needs and concerns. We come to you. Training takes place in your locality using local roads. If you want to practise a particular route – such as your journey to work – we can do that.
Your first training session will last 90 minutes. Subsequent sessions are one hour. The cost is £20 per session. Book now! [pdf]
Large employers, such as Orange, IKEA, DAS Insurance and Bristol University, that want to encourage cycle commuting have agreed to cover the cost of training for their staff. Ask your employer whether they will do the same.
Cycle Training for Children
Kids love bikes and they want to use them. Parents and carers are sometimes reluctant to let their children cycle on the roads due to concerns about safety. But cycling is actually a very safe form of transport – if it’s done properly.
Life Cycle UK runs regular training courses for children aged 8 to 11 to help them develop essential skills and confidence. Our courses take place over three days (two-and-a-half hours of training each day) and we work with up to six children at a time. Training begins off-road, away from traffic, but then quickly graduates to local roads. Children learn how to control their bikes, how to anticipate other road users’ behaviour, how to perform a range of manoeuvres clearly and accurately. This is the key to riding safely.
Our approach is child-centred – we don’t lecture kids or talk down to them. Instead, we build on children’s natural enthusiasm for cycling and draw out their understanding about traffic and how it operates. We encourage children to think for themselves. This is an interactive approach that children really respond to. They begin to grasp the rules of the road and start to develop real ‘road sense’.
Life Cycle UK runs courses take place during the school holidays, during half-term or after school. Places cost £40 per child. Check out our events pages to find out what’s happening in your area.
We can also run courses on request for youth groups, cubs, scouts, brownies and guides – in fact, you find us a group of kids (the minimum number is five) and we’ll run a course for you! As well as group sessions we can also provide one-to-one training. Contact us to find out more.
Parents! Don’t forget that Life Cycle UK runs a whole programme of cycle courses for schools in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Is your local school offering Life Cycle training?
Training for Schools
Life Cycle UK runs training course at schools in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. We aim to make it as easy as possible for the school to host a high quality course. Traditional cycle training uses volunteers, ties up teacher-time and requires the school to organise and administer the course. We’re different! We use our own professional cycle training instructors and we take care of most of the admin. We are also happy to visit a school and talk to a class or an assembly to generate interest.
Our cycle training is suitable for children aged 8 to 11. A course comprises four two-hour sessions usually a week apart. We work with groups of up to six children at a time. After acquiring basic competency away from traffic – on the school playground, for example – the children move onto to local roads. They learn how to control their bikes, how to anticipate other road users’ behaviour, and how to perform a range of manoeuvres safely and confidently.
The charge is £40 per child. Contact us to find out more or to book a course.
Life Cycle UK also runs training courses for children after school, during the school holidays and half-term.
Life Cycle UK is gaining a national reputation as a centre of excellence for cycle skills training. In collaboration with the Department for Transport and the Cyclists’ Touring Club we have written the forthcoming national standard for adult and teenage training.

Life Cycle UK has established training schemes in Herefordshire, Surrey and for health service providers in Bath and Bristol. Life Cycle UK has a rapidly expanding team of freelance cycle training instructors. They are all experienced cyclists and each has been through Life Cycle’s instructor training programme. This covers matters such as risk assessment, first aid and customer care, as well as giving new instructors a thorough grounding in how to plan and run a cycle training course. Because of the nature of our work all instructors have to be cleared by the Criminal Records Bureau.
We are looking for more people in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath to join the team. If you are interested why not check out the job spec and apply? It’s well-paid work and immensely satisfying. We usually run three instructor training courses each year.
People outside the Bristol area are welcome to join our instructor training courses too. The next course is on 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th October. There are still a few spare places. Contact us if you are interested.
We can also run instructor training courses elsewhere in the UK. Visit our consultancy pages for more information.
