Young people just love tinkering with bicycles and anything mechanical. And when given the chance to learn new skills in a non-academic environment, they thrive.
Life Cycle is running a six-session course in bike maintenance skills and cycling awareness aimed at young people aged 13 to 19. The course is both inspirational and rewarding and provides an environment where young people are challenged, motivated and encouraged to reach their potential.
The course focuses on 3 principal elements:
1. Practical, mechanical skills and knowledge
2. Cycle skills and awareness
3. The development of core ‘Wider Key Skills’
Through these elements, the Bike Generation course provides young people with a positive learning experience that will support both their personal and vocational development.
The course consists of six 3-hour sessions. Five of these concentrate on core areas of bicycle maintenance with one additional session of mountain biking. Each session is structured with a focus on practical, hands-on, kinaesthetic learning and some awareness-based discussion. We take a ‘plan, do and review’ approach, each session linked to associated learning objectives and outcomes. Each course will contain groups of up to six young people with two instructors.
The course can accommodate a range of levels and competencies and, where appropriate, offer the opportunity to work towards credits in already-established wider key skill qualifications such as ASDAN. We will assist all participants to document supporting evidence for such credits. All students who complete the courses will also receive a Life Cycle bike maintenance certificate and graduation pack.
